Trainee Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHP)
Job description
Permanent
Full Time, 37 Hours Per Week
Trainee Approved Mental Health Professional – Exeter (consideration will be given to appointing to other teams within Devon)
Grade G – £35,411 - £39,493 leading to Grade H £40,478 - £44,539 upon successful completion of the AMHP training course.
This is a full-time position.
Consideration will be given to part-time
working after completion of the AMHP Training. To be discussed at interview.
We are delighted to invite applications for a Trainee AMHP post within the daytime AMHP service. The successful candidate will be supported to access the 2023 Bournemouth University AMHP training course. The course is full time for approximately six months (starting in April 2023) and candidates will need to commit to being available for that whole period.
This post, which will lead to a permanent AMHP post upon successful conclusion of the course, is assigned into Devon Partnership NHS Trust.
The successful candidate will initially be placed within the Exeter AMHP Team, whose work-base is Wonford House Hospital (or other team by agreement).
During the training there will be a requirement to spend time in different bases across the county. Once qualified a willingness and ability to travel across the county to meet the needs of the wider service are essential. Practice placements during the course will be negotiated dependent on the needs of the individual.
This post is open to registered social workers, occupational therapists and mental health nurses with the required level of pre-requisite post-qualifying training and evidence of ability to study and pass modules at Masters level.
Candidates should ideally have two years of post-qualifying professional experience in mental health services, but each candidate will be considered on merit and their potential to utilise their transferable skills.
If you are currently employed by Devon Partnership NHS Trust, meet the minimum requirements for consideration, and are interested in the potential to join the team as a Trainee AMHP, please contact Robert Lewis (details below) for an informal discussion as to any potential secondment arrangements during the period of training.
It is strongly advised that prospective candidates undertake the following e-learning module about the AMHP role prior to submitting an application.

For free unregistered access: Bottom of the home page - “How to access” – select “View” – then click “The Role of the Approved Mental Health Professional” – then “Play” – then “continue”.
Interview requirements
If short-listed for interview, candidates will be asked to provide a short reflective piece on a Mental Health Act assessment that they have shadowed. It is important that in your application you confirm that you have shadowed a Mental Health Act assessment to be considered for short-listing.
Our service
The Devon AMHP Service has been recognised as an example of good practice and is active in the development of AMHP services and practice nationally.
The role of daytime AMHPs within Devon County Council has significantly changed in recent times, now consisting of four locally dedicated AMHP teams based within adult mental health services, with another daytime team supporting Adult Social Care services.
The daytime AMHP duty rota covers all age groups, including children. Our AMHPs no longer carry caseloads within community teams, instead they work more flexibly with internal and external partners to ensure a more robust response to those individuals who are at risk of being detained or restricted under the Mental Health Act.
We are constantly seeking ways to improve our service, including how best to capture and utilise the voices of those that have experience of being assessed under the Mental Health Act and to further improve practise for the benefit of those who come into contact with our service. We are also committed to improving the service we offer to help address the types of racial disparity in mental health services that were highlighted during 2018’s Review of the Mental Health Act and the subsequent White Paper on reforming the Mental Health Act (2021). We are also committed to supporting the recommendations of Devon County Council’s Race Equality Audit.
Trainee AMHPs
In order to apply for a Trainee post, you should ideally have completed, or already have submitted, the Bournemouth University Graduate Certificate in Specialist Practice in Mental Health or equivalent e.g. DSP (Developing Specialist Practice at Masters level).
Other acceptable qualifications include the Bournemouth University “Risk and Decision Making in Practice” module at Masters level or the Best Interest Assessors qualification at Masters level.
There is also flexibility to consider those applicants currently working in a mental health service (and have been for at least 6 months) and already have credits at Masters level.
As with all candidates, the applicant must be able to demonstrate that they have sufficient evidence of professional practice and academic ability for AMHP training at interview. Any final offer of a Trainee AMHP position will only be given upon evidence of successfully meeting the pre-course requirements and appropriate references.
Once in post, the Trainee will work within their locality AMHP team under the supervision of their AMHP Team Manager. The aim is for the Trainee to have the opportunity to experience the role and its complexity in full prior to the course.
The Trainee will support duty AMHPs on a variety of MHA assessments, spend time with the Central AMHP Team, provide s.2 reports to Mental Health Tribunals and engage in follow up work with individuals, their families and other professionals.
The Trainee will then be supported to submit an application to Bournemouth University (estimated to be January 2023) and, if successful, join the AMHP training course (estimated to start in April 2023).
The course is approximately six months long and full time. It is essential that candidates can commit to the whole timetable, including over the summer holiday period.
The Daytime AMHP Service will reserve the right to delay access to the course if further professional development of the candidate is felt to be required.
It is important for prospective candidates to understand that every effort is made to support Trainees through this process, but that it may be necessary to delay or even cease the individual’s progress at any point in the process.
All efforts will be made to minimise the risk of this and further detail on this will be provided at interview. Where progress is not considered possible, or the academic elements are eventually failed, redeployment opportunities will be explored with the individual.
Those who are currently employed by Devon Partnership NHS Trust may also be redeployed back through that agency’s processes.
As course dates are subject to change, consideration may need to be given to a temporary redeployment to another mental health team. Preference will be given to a role that will support the Trainee’s identified development needs.
